Pedestals are a New England based rock band, and another great addition to a new crop of young bands paying homage to 90s alternative rock/grunge, emo and shoegaze. The band just announced their self-released 10 song debut LP titled "Until I'm Still" set for release on February 2nd, 2024. Every now and then, I stumble across a new band on Spotify from the "fans also like" algorithm or my Discover Weekly curated playlist that grabs my attention, especially when it sounds like they're well-seasoned in their song writing. I try to keep up with all the latest stuff, so when Pedestals popped up with the song "In The Dark", I was immediately drawn to its big guitars and head-bobbing rhythm, and immediately checked out their profile. Come to find this band only had a few songs released in 2023, very little following, and it was hard to find much more about them. Hopefully, that's about to change as they gear up to unleash their new album "Until I'm Still" which was just announced on their instagram page. Pedestals has only released three singles to date which can all be streamed below, and a fourth single dropping Friday January 19th, all taken from the forthcoming LP. Like a lot of the newer bands getting attention today, Pedestals manage to combine a hybrid of sounds and adjacent genres into cohesive well thought out songs, similar to recent bands like Downward, Cursetheknife, Heavenward, and Soul Blind, etc, all bands we've written about and love at Releasewave.com. In speaking with the band, it’s clear the main song writers wear their influences on their sleeves and that’s never a bad thing. These guys clearly came up on all things 90s alt rock/grunge, emo, and early / mid 2000s pop punk, while also being influenced by what many refer to as "nu-gaze", bands that surfaced in the last 5 to 10 years who use a wall of guitars, delay, and pedal effects like Nothing or Narrow Head, all who have been doing this for a while now. Pedestals write big, melodic, high energy songs, often darker in tone, with loud guitars, bouncy rhythms, and sing-along melodies, while maintaining heavy alternative pop rock structure to the songs. It’s got that whole emo/shoegazey alt rock revival thing that I love, but there are also subtle hints of the poppier and experimental elements of “Glow On” era Turnstile along with the dreampop/emo sounds you'd find on Turnover's “Peripheral Vision”, but without really sounding like either one of these bands. With all that, the songs also have the heaviness and textures of bands like Basement, Balance and Composure, Superheaven, Teenage Wrist, Paerish, Gleemer and early Citizen, combing 90s post-grunge, emo and shoegaze, with in a solid dose of hook laden pop punk melodies that wouldn't be out of place on a The Story So Far album. Although there are a lot of bands doing various versions of this whole hybrid sound right now, Pedestals another new band on the scene doing it justice and are well worth checking out. For a self-released, and I'm assuming mostly self-produced debut LP with the help of some of their friends, this stuff sounds pretty great. Put these guys in the studio with Will Yip and let's see what happens for their next outing! For now, enjoy the new singles and get ready for a really good debut LP.
