Happy Body Slow Brain: Dreams Of Water
Matt Fazzi is no stranger to musical endeavors. I’ll never forget seeing him and Facing New York play in a crowded, tiny excuse for a venue in Southern California, filled with a sense of intimacy and energy I knew was rare in this (well, that) day and age. Albeit I never became a full-fledged Facing New York fan (they lost me quickly with their final LP), it was only recently that I truly discovered and understood the raw talent that is Matt Fazzi. The live Taking Back Sunday album/DVD unveiled a characteristically charming, soulful Fazzi exploring tranquil, smooth vocal endeavors and putting his own creative spin on the familiar TBS anthems.
Admittedly, I’m always a bit more excited than anything when a member of a popular band leaves to start their own project–and Fazzi, who encapsulates musical talent and creativity to no end, is no exception. “Dreams of Water” unveils a splendid mix of chilly, intimate rock songs, using the rhodes keyboard and synth tastefully. The decadent rhythms fall nothing short of epic on this record; whether it’s the subtle hand claps on “Never Loved” or the spazzy, whimsical drumming on “Up Late,” the album never holds back. Almost immediately, comparisons to my personal long time favorites Counterfit (and now Helen Earth Band) come to mind; choppy, dicey rhythms combine with serene, blissful vocals. Moody and elegant, the album never ceases to explore a new realm of tranquility, constantly pushing the envelope. At once it’s concise but expansive; light while dark.
“Dreams Of Water” has truly made me feel inspired, renewed, and ecstatic about music in general; it seems, the albums that I’m not expecting always tend to surprise me the most. And would you believe the band is releasing this 13-song gem all on their lonesome? Support them and pray for a tour.
